How rowOps Solo handles your data, written against what the app actually does. Last updated 30 August 2026.
The short version
- The app needs no account and works fully offline. Without a Solo Pro account, nothing about your rowing is sent anywhere, ever. With Solo Pro, your rows sync to your account automatically — that is what the subscription is for — and you can switch it off. Once you are signed in, the app also checks whether your subscription is active when you open it.
- Your rows and heart rate are stored on your phone, in your browser's own storage.
- There is no analytics, no tracking, no advertising, and no cookies set by this app — of any kind.
- Two things reach the internet on purpose: Solo Pro (subscription checks and sync, once you sign in) and the daily quote on the Today page, which the app downloads from our server — that request sends nothing about you, signed in or not.
Who is responsible for your data
The legal entity operating rowOps is being finalised. Until it is named here, contact us through the address you signed up with and we will route your request — see Your rights below, including your right to complain to the Data Protection Commission regardless.
What stays on your phone
The app writes everything it records into your browser's own storage on this device. None of it is readable by us, and none of it is sent anywhere by being written here.
IndexedDB (database rowops-pace-solo) holds:
- Sessions — rows captured with your phone's GPS (a precise location trace), phone-accelerometer stroke events, heart-rate samples from a paired strap, any Good/Issue/Note annotations you write, your stroke-sensor calibration, any interval plan, and data read from a Pace boat unit.
- Training plans and plan assignments — a programme held on this device. Your programme comes from your Solo Pro account, so nothing new is written to this store; anything already in it stays on your device until you clear the app's data, and you can download it with the "Download my programme data" button on the local programme page.
- What you tick off and log against a programme — which sessions and exercises you marked done, and for gym work the reps, external load, hold seconds, side, effort rating (RPE) and reps-in-reserve (RIR) you record. This one is still being written, every time you tick a set on Today. It stays here until it syncs to your Solo Pro account, if you have one.
- Trials you record — for a benchmark test or a maximum-heart-rate test: the total time, distance, mean rate, drag factor, opening split, time of day, peak heart rate, whether you judged the trial valid and why not, and the targets it was rowed against. Your body weight is not among them and is not recorded anywhere in this app.
- Goals and events — the target grid and countdowns on the Today page.
localStorage holds small settings and, if you sign in, your Solo Pro session. These belong to the phone and survive signing out:

When a watch and an erg, or a watch and this phone, record the same morning the app shows them as one outing or offers to link them, and this remembers which of those you refused, so it stops asking. It is a note about a suggestion, not about your training: nothing is hidden, nothing is deleted, and it is never sent anywhererowops-match-overrides— days you have told us a session actually belongs to — “I did Saturday’s on Friday”. Like the two above it, it is a correction to a guess this phone made about your own programme: the session is untouched, the prescribed day is untouched, and it is never sent anywhererowops-solo-recorded-any— a single yes/no — whether any row has ever been saved on this phone, so the home page can stop explaining the app to somebody who has already used it. It counts nothing, dates nothing, names nobody and is never sent anywhere
rowops-solo-device-epoch sits between the two: a random label this phone puts on rows you record while signed out, so they can be offered back to you if you make an account later. It names no person and is never sent anywhere. It belongs to the phone rather than to any account, but signing out does delete it — the phone may be changing hands, so the next stretch of signed-out recording gets a new label and is never offered to the person who just left. Rows already carrying the old label keep it.
These exist only while you are signed in, and signing out deletes every one of them:

No name, no email, no coach identity of any kindrowops-solo-coach-notes— a copy of the debrief notes your coaches have written on your sessions — and any replies you wrote back — saved when the account page last loaded them, so other pages can point at them without going onlinerowops-solo-readiness-days— the four 1–5 scores from your recent daily check-ins — sleep, soreness, energy and mood, at most the last 60 days — kept so the Week page can draw their trend without going online. The scores only: anything you type in the check-in's notes box is never stored on this phone
sessionStorage holds two things, and only while the browser tab is open: rowops-pending-integration-provider and rowops-connect-ticket-return-to — which fitness provider you are part-way through connecting, and where to return you afterwards. Closing the tab discards both.
Clearing this site's data in your browser, or uninstalling the app, deletes all of it. There is no backup unless you have synced to Solo Pro — which, with a Solo Pro account, happens automatically unless you have switched it off.
When data leaves your phone
Exhaustively — these are the only paths. Two of them run by themselves once you are signed in to Solo Pro: the subscription check, and automatic session sync. You start every other one:
- Checking your subscription (any page, once you are signed in) — the app asks Solo Pro whether your subscription is still active. This sends your sign-in token and nothing else: no rowing, heart-rate or location data. Like automatic sync below, it runs without you starting it. Legal basis: performance of a contract with you.
- Creating or signing in to a Solo Pro account (Solo Pro) — your email address and password go to the rowOps Solo Pro service. Legal basis: performance of a contract with you.
- Syncing sessions (Solo Pro — automatically, or by pressing "Sync now") — this uploads every session on the device that belongs to your account, in full. That includes the complete GPS trace, stroke data, your heart-rate samples, your markers and notes, and anything read from a Pace unit or watch file. Legal basis: performance of your contract with us — cloud sync across your devices is the service Solo Pro provides, and it runs from the moment you subscribe. Because heart rate and location are health data, you can switch it off at any time on the Solo Pro page, and you can delete anything already uploaded.
- Cloud programme import (Cloud Program) — the spreadsheet you choose, or the Google Sheets link you paste, is uploaded to Solo Pro to be parsed there. Legal basis: performance of a contract.
- Your daily check-in (Today) — the four 1–5 scores you give for sleep, soreness, energy and mood, and anything you type in its notes box, are sent to Solo Pro and kept in your account. No coach is shown the scores as numbers. Legal basis: your explicit consent (these are health data), which you can withdraw.
- Push reminders (Today) — enabling them sends your browser's push subscription (an endpoint URL and its encryption keys), your browser's user-agent string, your time zone, and your reminder times to Solo Pro so the reminder can be sent when the app is closed. Legal basis: your consent.
- Connecting a fitness account (Integrations) — you are redirected to that provider's own sign-in page, and afterwards Solo Pro holds the access token and pulls your activities from them. Legal basis: your explicit consent.
- Inviting a coach, or accepting a coach's invite (Solo Pro) — this is a person, not a club, and it is the one path where someone else reads your training. Inviting sends the email address you type to Solo Pro. Once they accept, that coach can read every session you have synced from the date you chose onwards — or your whole history if you chose no date — and that includes your complete GPS tracks, your heart-rate samples, your markers and notes, your effort ratings (RPE), and the programme you are following. It also includes the strength work you log, subject to the extra step below. Your sleep, soreness, energy and mood scores are not shown to them as numbers. You pick the date, you can move it or revoke them at any time, and either takes effect on their very next look. Legal basis: your explicit consent (this includes health and location data), which you can withdraw.
- Your date of birth and country, before any of that (Solo Pro) — a coach link cannot start until you have told us how old you are, because that decides whether a parent or guardian has to agree first. If you are under the age at which you can agree for yourself (16 unless the country you name sets it lower, and never below 13), the coach nominates a parent or guardian, and we email that guardian a one-time link to say yes or no. That means we hold and use their name and email address to ask them. Your coach is never shown your date of birth, your age or your country. Legal basis: your explicit consent, and for a child, the consent of the holder of parental responsibility (Art. 8 GDPR).
- Accepting a club invite (Club invites) — accepting gives that club's coaches access to your training data in rowOps, for the streams you choose. This is a different path from an individual coach above, and it is the one place you still pick stream by stream. Declining sends nothing but the decline. Legal basis: your explicit consent.
- Club-funded Solo Pro coverage — separately from the above, and without you doing anything: if you are a member of a rowing club that runs rowOps and your squad is coached, the club can pay for your Solo Pro subscription. Solo Pro keeps a record of when that coverage starts and ends, which club it came from, and — if you were paying for Solo Pro yourself at the time — the amount of that subscription. This moves no training data; it only decides who pays. Legal basis: performance of a contract between you and your club.
- Subscribing (Solo Pro) — you are redirected to Stripe's own hosted checkout page. Stripe processes your payment details; rowOps never sees your card number. Legal basis: performance of a contract.
Providing any of this is entirely optional. The free app works without it, and refusing has no consequence beyond that feature not working.
Age
The free app is for everyone, at any age. It keeps everything on your own phone and asks for no account, so there is nothing for us to hold about you regardless of how old you are.
Solo Pro does not have a minimum age, but it does have age rules — and they are about what we will hold, not about who may subscribe. It syncs the same rowing data to your account so you can reach it from more than one device. Two things work differently depending on your age, and both are decided from the date of birth you give us:
- Heart rate has a floor. If you are younger than the J15 age band, a heart rate is not stored at all — it is removed before your session is saved, not hidden afterwards. If you have not told us your age, any heart rate you sync is kept but shown to nobody, including you, until you do; the day you tell us, it appears, and nothing had to be re-uploaded. This is judged against your age on the day of each session, so getting older releases the right sessions on its own.
- Body weight and calorie or macronutrient targets are for verified adults only. Not "adults" as in a date you typed — verified, meaning a coach who has met you in person has attested that you are eighteen or over. Until then, a programme you import keeps its training and loses those columns, and there is nowhere to record a weight. If you later change your date of birth, that verification stops counting immediately and any weights you had recorded are deleted, not merely hidden.
Linking a coach does have one. Because that lets another person read your training, we have to know how old you are before a link can start — so you are asked for your date of birth and the country you live in on the Solo Pro page, and nothing about a coach can happen until you answer. If you are at or over the age you can agree for yourself, it is your own decision. If you are under it, your coach nominates a parent or guardian and we email them a one-time link; the coach sees nothing at all unless that guardian says yes. The age is 16 unless the country you name sets it lower, and it is never below 13; naming no country means we use the strictest answer, 16. Your date of birth and country are used for this and nothing else, and no coach is shown either.
Who else receives it
- rowOps Solo Pro — our own service, on servers in the EU. Synced sessions are encrypted at rest.
- Your browser's push service — Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft, depending on your browser. Unavoidable if you enable push notifications: it is the only route a browser has to deliver one.
- A fitness provider you connect — Concept2, Garmin, Strava, Polar, Whoop, Fitbit or Wahoo, only if you connect it, and only that one.
- Stripe — payment processing, only if you subscribe.
- A coach you have linked — a named individual, only if you invited them or accepted their invite, and only your sessions from the date you chose onwards. They see the GPS, heart-rate and effort data in those sessions. Revoking them ends it.
- A parent or guardian you or your coach nominated — only if you are under the age of consent where you live, and only to be asked whether they allow the coaching link. They are told who is asking and when; they are told nothing about your training.
- A rowing club — only if you accept its invite.
We do not sell your data, share it for advertising, or use it to train anything. Some of the providers above are outside the EU/EEA and operate under their own transfer safeguards; connecting them is optional and yours to choose.
Health data
Heart rate, and where you rowed, are health data — a special category under GDPR that needs a higher bar than ordinary data.
On free rowOps Solo, none of it is ever uploaded. There is no account and nothing leaves the device.
On Solo Pro, automatic sync is on from the moment you subscribe, because syncing your rowing across your devices is the thing Solo Pro is. We tell you this when you create the account, and again on the Solo Pro page, where the switch is. Turning it off stops further uploads straight away; we record the date you did, both on your device and in your account. What is already in your account stays there until you delete it, and deleting it here deletes it there.
This changed on 24 August 2026. Before that the switch was off until you turned it on. If you had already turned it on, nothing about your account changes. If you had deliberately left it off, that decision is kept and sync stays off for you.
Who then reads it matters as much as where it is stored. Uploading puts it in your account. A coach you link can read it: the full GPS track and the heart-rate samples for every session inside the date range you gave them, not a summary. That is the same explicit consent, given separately, and you can narrow the date or revoke the coach at any time. No coach is given your sleep, soreness, energy or mood scores as numbers.
With automatic sync on, rows you record or import are uploaded on their own when you open the home page, Today, Week or Solo Pro, and rows already in your account are copied back onto this device. Deleting a row here also deletes the copy in your account, and any other device you use drops its copy the next time it syncs. With it off, nothing is uploaded unless you press Sync now.
Rows you recorded before you subscribed are not swept up. Anything recorded while signed out belongs to the device, not to an account, and automatic sync never touches it. Solo Pro offers those to you once, with a count and the dates, and only a tap moves them — which is also what keeps a shared phone's history out of the wrong account.
This app holds no calorie budgets, no weight tracking and no weight-loss goals. No part of rowOps has a calorie budget, a weight-loss goal, or anything that tells you to eat less — that is deliberate and it is not going to change. Solo Pro can record a body weight, for a verified adult only, and it does nothing with it beyond showing it back to you and to a coach you have linked: no target, no trend line, no month-to-month change, and never a squad list. See our wellbeing resources, which are free and open to everyone.
How long it is kept
On your phone — until you delete it. Individual sessions have their own delete button, and clearing site data or uninstalling removes everything.
On Solo Pro — for as long as your account exists, and no longer than you want. Deleting a session on your phone also erases the copy in your account, the next time this device reaches Solo Pro. You can download everything your account holds, and permanently delete the account itself, from Your data in your Solo Pro account — no request needed. Ask us instead if you would rather, and we will do it free.
Your rights
For anything you have synced to Solo Pro, you have the right to: get a copy of it, have it corrected, have it erased, restrict or object to how it is used, take it elsewhere in a portable form, and withdraw a consent you gave (which does not undo what was done before you withdrew it). Ask us and we will do it, free, within one month.
Data that never left your phone isn't something we can act on — we have no copy of it. Your browser's site-data controls are the delete button for that.
If you think we have handled your data badly you can complain to the Irish supervisory authority, the Data Protection Commission — dataprotection.ie, 21 Fitzwilliam Square South, Dublin 2, D02 RD28. You can also complain to the authority where you live or work.
Automated decisions and profiling
There are none. The app calculates splits and progress from what you record, and shows you the result — nothing decides anything about you, and no profile is built.
No AI services see your data
Your data — including anything that comes in from a connected service such as Concept2, Polar or Garmin — is not shared with, processed by, or made available to any external AI provider or third-party AI service. Every calculation the app shows you runs in our own software, nowhere else.
Changes to this notice
If what the app does changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves. If a change materially affects data you have already synced, we will tell you rather than quietly editing this page.
